Do you know your packaged food ?

We all assume we know what packaged food is. Also, we think we know we use only packaged food from very good brands and that too occasionally and hence, it doesn’t matter. Is that really true ? Are we ready to look at this through the eyes of a fellow Indian woman who has done a lot of research on this ?

We start this episode getting to know Anuradha and what triggered her on this journey to know more about packaged food. We then examine the question of why the New Indian Woman should increase her awareness on this topic. Anuradha reflects on her experience over the past few decades and explains why early intervention is required and why we should not wait till we face the harmful side effects.

She explains how to check labels and why it is not enough to look only at expiry dates. Remember, she has done a lot of research and published a lot of articles on this topic. I would like to call out 2 valuable articles from the treasure trove of information she has published - Master List of Analysis of packaged / junk foods and

A primer on how to read food labels. Please don’t forget to go through these.

I remember going to nearby kirana stores as a kid where they would weigh the item that was being bought and give them in normal newspaper or brown covers. If you are buying most of your food in this manner, may this episode is not so relevant for you!! If you are someone who hasn’t done that in a long while, and most of the food items you buy are in packets, you may wonder if everything should be considered as packaged food. Here, Anuradha helps us understand this in a very simple manner. What exactly is a packaged food ? Is it a packaged food only with attractive labels and advertisements ?

Then she introduces us on how to read labels on packaged foods. Once again, in a simple manner that even kids can use. She explains why it is important for each one of us to know about the labels in the packets. Ultimately, all of these go into the body. If we do not evaluate if it is harmful or not, who will ?
